AUSL Notebook, June 21-27: Talons Win Seven Straight, Volts Set Home Run Record

The Utah Talons moved into first place in the AUSL’s third week. They won seven straight before the Carolina Blaze stopped them Saturday. The Texas Volts set a league record for home runs in a game, and the Blaze hosted the AUSL’s first Signature Series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. This notebook covers Sunday, June 21, through Saturday, June 27.

Talons win seven straight

Utah’s streak began June 18 in Round Rock and reached seven games Friday in Durham. The league said the Talons outscored opponents 35-10 over the seven wins.

Jadelyn Allchin hit the first grand slam in Talons history Tuesday against Oklahoma City at Dumke Family Softball Stadium. Her fourth-inning drive to right-center deflected off a diving Amari Harper, and Allchin circled the bases for an inside-the-park grand slam in a 6-3 win. The AUSL said it was the second inside-the-park home run in league regular-season history and the sixth grand slam.

Georgina Corrick threw all eight innings of a 3-2 win Thursday in the Signature Series opener. Neither run she allowed was earned. Karlyn Pickens took her first professional loss after going 7.1 innings for the Blaze.

Montana Fouts followed Friday with a four-hit shutout, 3-0, without a walk. She moved to a league-best 5-1.

Carolina ended the streak Saturday with a 6-1 win. Dakota Kennedy, Valerie Cagle and Devyn Netz homered.

The Signature Series

The Blaze played the three games against Utah at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, home of the Durham Bulls, instead of their usual home field at Smith Family Stadium. The North Carolina Courage came to the opener, and goalkeeper Molly Pritchard threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Volts hit five home runs

The Volts ended a six-game losing streak Tuesday with a 6-2 win over the Chicago Bandits at Dell Diamond. They hit five home runs, which the AUSL said is a league record for a single game. The previous mark was four.

Tiare Jennings and Aliyah Binford hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning, each on the first pitch. Michaela Edenfield hit her first professional home run in the fifth, and Aminah Vega homered in the sixth. Binford added a two-run shot later that inning and threw three scoreless innings in relief.

Texas beat Chicago again Wednesday, 6-4, on a three-run homer from Sierra Romero.

Cascade’s seventh-inning rally

Portland trailed Texas 1-0 going to the seventh inning Friday while Sam Landry held the Volts to one hit. The Cascade scored five runs in the inning on three home runs. Korbe Otis hit a two-run shot, Megan Grant went back-to-back with her, and Kenleigh Cahalan added a two-run homer. Landry finished a two-hitter in the 5-1 win.

“We said in the huddle, ‘We’re one swing away,'” Otis said. “So I think that mindset really helped us.”

The Cascade beat Texas again Saturday, 6-3, and sit second at 7-4.

Bandits: Fiser and Wallace

Sunday’s Blaze-Bandits game in Rosemont was moved to Monday because of forecast weather. Amber Fiser, who joined Chicago from the league’s reserve pool, threw a complete game in the 5-1 makeup win. She threw 136 pitches and allowed four hits.

On Saturday, Skylar Wallace hit two home runs in her second start since returning from the Japan Diamond League. Chicago beat Oklahoma City 14-0 in five innings. Lexi Kilfoyl threw a shutout in her season debut.

Brady’s streak

Maya Brady hit her league-leading fifth home run Sunday to tie the game in the fifth inning, and the Spark won 4-3 in Hillsboro. She also singled, extending what the AUSL called a league-record 15-game hitting streak that dates to last season.

The Spark lost their next three games and fell to 5-7.
