HOUSTON — Kenzie Brown struck out 10 batters Friday as Arizona State topped Houston 5-2, extending her streak of consecutive double-digit-strikeout games to four — the longest of her college career.
Brown, an AUSL Golden Ticket pick heading into the May 4 draft, improved her season record to 11-5 with the win. Arizona State trailed 2-2 heading into the seventh inning before rallying for three runs to close it out.
The Game
Emily Schepp gave Arizona State an early lead with a home run in the third inning. Houston came back to tie it at 2-2 in the sixth on an unearned run. Brown held the Cougars from there.
The Sun Devils answered in the seventh. Kaylee Pond hit a sacrifice fly to score Corie Shull and put Arizona State back in front. Samantha Swan then doubled to left-center, scoring Tanya Windle to make it 4-2. Schepp drove in the fifth run with an RBI groundout. Three runs on the inning, game over, 5-2 final.
Four in a Row
Brown’s 10-strikeout outing Friday was her fourth consecutive game reaching double digits in strikeouts, according to Arizona State’s game notes. Earlier in the week, she set a career high with 16 strikeouts against Grand Canyon University, per a BVM Sports roundup published Friday.
The four-game streak of 10 or more strikeouts is the longest of Brown’s career. Arizona State’s preview of the Houston series noted that she needs 19 strikeouts over the course of the weekend series to surpass 200 strikeouts for the season. Brown added 10 Friday, with a series finale still ahead.
The Draft Picture
Brown is one of three pitchers in the 2026 Golden Ticket class with power strikeout profiles, alongside NiJaree Canady (Texas Tech) and Karlyn Pickens (Tennessee). Taylor Tinsley of UCLA, announced as a Golden Ticket recipient the following day, is a fourth pitcher in the class.
For the six AUSL franchises — Carolina Blaze, Chicago Bandits, Oklahoma City Spark, Portland Cascade, Texas Volts and Utah Talons — Brown’s April has been defined by a 16-strikeout game and four consecutive double-digit starts heading into the final weeks of the college season.
Looking Ahead
Arizona State has the series finale against Houston remaining before moving on. Brown’s status for Sunday’s game was not indicated in the team’s Saturday notes. The AUSL draft airs May 4 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2, with Commissioner Kim Ng announcing picks live.
